The first time I took a Briggs OHV valve cover off, I only saw the two side bolts, and after removing those two, proceeded to try prying off the still-bolted-on cover! Looking inside the valve cover gives you an good indication if the engine oil was changed regularly. I was pleased to see how clean the rocker arms, valve springs and valves were on my pressure washer engine. Removing the spark plug reduces engine compression, making it easy to pull the start rope and move the piston and valves.
With the valve cover off and the spark plug removed, you can pull the start rope and watch how the valves open and close. There are two popular methods for checking valve clearances. The recommended procedure from most service manuals is method 1, where a screwdriver is used to gauge the piston's range of motion. Insert a narrow screwdriver into the spark plug hole and touch the piston. Stop the piston at the top of it's travel as indicated by the screwdriver sticking out.
Check the valve clearances one at a time by placing a feeler gauge between the each valve and rocker arm. For this method, you don't need to find piston TDC, but it will take an additional step. You will start with the intake side first, followed by the exhaust side. On this motor, the top rocker arm is the intake side.
Pull the start rope slowly. When the bottom rocker pushes the exhaust valve in, the top intake valve will have slack. You can now check the intake valve clearance and adjust if needed. After the intake side is done, pull the start rope slowly, and watch for the top rocker to push the intake valve in. It would be enough to get by, for example some word processing and web browsing. This is not, in my opinion a "good" tech spec for a pc. By today's standard, without emptying the wallet in the process, a better alternative would be a dual core processor. Pentium D is the older model of this, or Core 2 Duo, being newer models. I think it's entirely possible, but i remember reading a Blue ox exhaust brake brochure stating some engines require stiffer exhaust valve springs to do the combo braking.

I am not positive, but I think they came on the "A" model My "E" model has one, and with jakes and the retarder it can comfortably come down hills as fast as it climbs them, and it climbs really good. In order that the engine may be rotated while the batteries are disconnected a special cranking device SE can be fitted to a starter motor hole in the flywheel housing see Fig. The flywheel housing has an inspection hole directly below the turbocharger through which the flywheel markings may be seen to line up with the pointer set in the flywheel housing Fig. Using a socket and ratchet wrench press against the spring loaded bolt head until the pinion engages with the flywheel gear then crank the engine to the desired position.
Equalizing the Bridge Pieces. Having rotated the engine to the correct position, check that the inlet and exhaust rockers have clearance before continuing with the next operation.
Loosen the lock nut 1 on each bridge piece, screw the adjuster 2 out until the fixed side of the bridge piece rests on its valve, hold the top edge down with one hand, then screw the adjuster down until you feel it touch the valve, thereby equalizing valve lift. Tighten the lock nut without moving the adjusters see Fig. Setting Valve Clearance. With both bridge pieces equalized check the valve clearance of 0. If adjustment is required loosen the lock nut 2 and using the adjuster screw 3 set the clearance see Fig.

Remove the air filter housing, carburetor, muffler and any other components blocking access to the cylinder head. This varies by model; some models require you to remove all of these engine components while other models don't require you to remove any of them. Remove the rocker-cover screws and pull the cover off to reveal the valves.
Turn the flywheel by hand until both valves are closed and the piston is at top dead center. Insert a dowel into the spark plug hole until it contacts the piston. Make a mark on the dowel even with the edge of the spark plug hole. Turn the flywheel until the piston is at its lowest point. Make another mark on the dowel. Turn the flywheel until the valves are closed and the piston is at top dead center.
Measure the distance between the two marks on the dowel. Make another mark on the dowel that is one-quarter of the distance from the first mark to the second. Insert the dowel in the spark plug hole and turn the flywheel past top dead center until the third mark on the dowel is even with the spark plug hole. Check the manufacturer's documentation to determine the correct valve clearance for your engine.
